Elan Valley & Pembrokeshire Coast & St. Davids

Wednesday 16th August 2017

After a day of washing and other domestic chores on Tuesday we set off to visit the dams & reservoirs of the Elan Valley. These are a series of dams built to provide water for the city of Birmingham. The dams were opened between 1904 and 1952.

Kilometres Today: 189 Cumulative: 497

We moved on again today to the Camping & Caravanning Club site near St. Davids. Staying here for four nights before catching ferry to Ireland on Monday. Took A44 route up toward Aberystwyth and the road had me wishing I was on my motorcycle again. Arrived in very windy conditions which then persisted for much of our visit.

After breakfast we walked down to nearby Abereiddy Bay and started to walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path to Porthgain. Near the start is a feature known as the Blue Lagoon. We stayed and watched for a while as some young groups were being instructed in coasteering, a word I’d never heard of.

A mile or so further on we had excellent views down onto Traethllyfn beach.

Another mile or so later along the coastal path, after a long descent down steep stairs, brought us to the little port of Porthgain. We rewarded ourselves for our efforts with a Peroni and fish & chip lunch at The Shed before climbing said steep stairs and walking the reverse route back to the caravan.

Late in the  morning we drove down to Whitesands Beach, a haven for surfers.

The plan was to walk the coast route around to St. Justinians to see the St. Davids lifeboat station & closer views of Ramsey Island an RSPB Reserve. The route was harder walking than yesterday with the path being very narrow in places as well as steep. We eventually turned a corner to find;

We stopped a while for a coffee and watched the jet boat experience clients preparing to get very wet.

We walked a shorter route back to the car and set off to see the cathedral in St. Davids.

We looked around the cathedral & city for a couple of hours before the need for beer became apparent. We drove back over to Porthgain to try a recommended pub The Sloop. Had a nice couple of pints of Welsh bitter accompanied by moules mariniere.

Quiet day in. Weather has turned for the worst with high wind & rain. Hurricane Gert getting the blame apparently. Off to Ireland tomorrow.
