Sierra Nevada

Tuesday 6th February 2018

We had decided that we would visit La Alhambra Palace today. We had not booked but thought that this would not be a problem at this time of year. Wrong. On arrival the car parks were very full and a large number of school children were waiting to enter.

We joined a very slow moving queue to buy tickets before deciding to abandon this plan and go up into the Sierra Nevada National Park for the rest of the day. We would buy tickets online later for a quieter day at the Alhambra.

On the way to the national park we spotted signs for the ski station. Kim is well aware of my love of twisty roads and suggested we follow the signs and watch the skiing.

The road up the mountain was excellent and made me wish that I had my old motorcycle here. That was until Kim pointed out the    temperature outside was plummeting. It quickly fell below freezing, with plenty of snow along the side of the road. I couldn’t resist testing the Kugas all wheel drive system 🙂

We continued to climb and as we neared the ski station the temperature fell to  -7°C!

We drove around the resort looking for somewhere to have coffee but parking places were at a premium and the underground car parks out of bounds for us due to the box on top of the car.

We therefore decided to head back down and investigate some of the Las Alpujarras white villages and the large dam nearby.

The roads around this region are excellent to drive and the views are stunning.

As the sun was starting to go down, we returned to Don Cactus for dinner and a beverage or two 🙂
