Ray has always been keen to visit places with a connection to World War events and our proximity to the city of Arnhem made a trip to the John Frost Bridge, The Bridge Too Far, in Arnhem a real possibility.
Even more so, we could cycle there on designated cycle routes. Only 20 kms there and 20 kms back again. We both felt we were up for it, even without the assistance of a battery powered bike each 😉
Our journey from the campsite took us towards Olburgen and across the River Ijssel on the Dieran/Olburgen ferry.
A very short trip but well worth the €2 to save valuable time and extra kilometres to circumnavigate the river.
Our cycle route took us along the edge of the National Park Veluwezoom and through some charming villages with well kept gardens; Ellecom, De Steeg and Rheden before hitting the more heavily populated town of Velp, where major roadworks were taking place which made the cycle ride a little unpleasant.
And finally into Arnhem, where we realised that our knowledge of cycling in large cities was going to be tested. After negotiating the roads around Arnhem City Railway Station we eventually made it to the Airborne Monument roundabout and onto the John Frost Bridge.
The bridge isn’t particularly spectacular but what it commemorates is.
After battling our way back out of Arnhem we passed the Museum Bronbeek.Â
We felt safe to be back on the fietsroute and on our way back to our quiet, rural campsite.
