We had both seen the film, The Bridge of Spies, with the brilliant Mark Rylance and Tom Hanks, and Ray remembered, during his
childhood, the U-2 spy plane incident, which ultimately involved a prisoner exchange on Glienicke Bridge.
The bridge was about a one hour drive from our location in Oranienburg. The bridge connects Potsdam, the capital city of Brandenburg with Berlin and crosses the Havel River. We wanted to make use of the cycle routes (Fietsroute) that were on our doorstep despite the extremely hot weather that we were experiencing, as we don’t often get the opportunity to cycle in such a safe manner. Ray has always been keen to visit places with a connection to World War events and our proximity to the city of Arnhem made a trip to the John Frost Bridge, The Bridge Too Far, in Arnhem a real possibility.
