Our journey yesterday had taken us through the village of Kabelvåg and it was not difficult to miss the beautiful Vågan Church or as it is sometimes nicknamed, Lofoten Cathedral.
This building purports to be the largest wooden building in Northern Norway and was built in 1898 to accommodate all the fishermen who came to Kabelvåg each season, although this has been the site of a church since the 12th century.
Unfortunately on the day we visited a funeral was taking place so we were unable to see inside the church but the exterior was worth the stop.
A short drive from here on E 10 back towards our campsite we noticed a sign for Lofotakvariet, signposted as point of interest.
The Lofoten Aquarium was located at the end of a short road and is part of the SKREI Experience Center and lies within close walking distance of the Lofoten Museum and the Gallery Espolin.
We purchased a ticket only for the aquarium, which was 130 NOK each. A ticket for the whole SKREI experience was 220 NOK.
Skrei is the name for northeast Atlantic or Lofoten cod.
As well as the skrei aquarium, there are many other aquariums containing most other species of fish and marine animals found in the waters around Lofoten. The exhibits were interesting and informative.
Outdoors you can visit the seals and otters and enjoy the spectacular views around the aquarium. If you fancy taking a fishing net and a bucket you can even head down to the water’s edge and see what you can catch!
Like a lot of places in Norway, the cafe was expensive and the coffee had been on the brew all day, so we didn’t partake. The small shop selling souvenirs was devoid of customers but it was pleasant to sit on the outdoor decking and enjoy the sun.
