Implementing Plan B

Friday 21st September 2018

Plan A, to store the van and car here and fly home for a few days from Copenhagen, hadn’t worked. The site we were on didn’t like the idea of storing the car & van for us, nor did another I’d emailed.

After a bit of pondering I came up with a plan to approach our friend Lutz and see if he would let us store in his garden near Berlin. We could fly home from there, and, on our return, head south toward Colditz, Prague, and Budapest and hopefully better weather than we had had lately. Lutz immediately agreed ( after seeking domestic approval, of course) . 🙂

Towing Kilometres – Today: 270 Cumulative: 24,691

We chose a camping card site on the west coast, Ballum Camping, to stay enroute to Lutzs’ place.

As we were packing up the wind began to increase noticeably in speed and as we set off the car and caravan were being buffeted on open stretches of road.

The route included a near 7km long, 65 metre high suspension bridge, the Storebæltsforbindelsen, and as we approached I had a feeling of trepidation about towing the caravan over in significant cross winds.

Fortunately the authorities had issued a recommendation that high sided vehicles and caravans should not cross and we pulled over into the parking area with numerous other caravans and trucks.

We consulted the bridge web site which stated the situation would be reviewed in a couple of hours, at 14:00.

We settled down to some lunch and caught up with some recorded TV. Within minutes the caravan was being rocked by the fiercest of gales and heavy rain and I was extremely pleased we were not on the bridge.

The rain stopped and the wind veered more to a westerly direction meaning it would no longer be a crosswind. The web site removed its’ recommendation so we made our way to the crossing.

After paying the toll, 365DKK, we proceeded to cross among a long line of trucks, the only real disturbance to the caravan being caused by the odd overtaking coach.

The journey continued all the way in strong, blustery, winds and I was quite relieved to arrive on site, where we received a friendly welcome.
