Resumption Of Travels

Sunday 7th October 2018

After an excellent 9 days or so visiting family, including new granddaughter Lucy, we returned to Berlin on Thursday for resumption of our travels..

Many thanks to Matthew for putting us up, & putting up with us, and for the loan of a car for our visit. Also to Jacqui & Mark for hosting us at the weekend, and Paul & Ros for lunch on Tuesday.

Lutz had been patiently waiting to pick us up from our delayed flight and once we had stowed our bags in the car he whisked us off to a quirky bar just over the airport fence. Unfortunately the whisking was a little too efficient as he was flashed by a speed camera on the way. Doh!

The bar is the site of a museum with aircraft and vehicles from the Cold War era. Unfortunately the beer & chat held more interest on this occasion 🙂

We spent an evening of sushi, beer & wine, chat, and watching football. Unfortunately Antje didn’t join us as she was unwell and remained in her sick bed. We learned that Lutz and Antje would be visiting Chemnitz at the weekend so we arranged to meet for lunch in Colditz on Sunday.

Friday morning we prepared the car and caravan to travel down to our next intended place to visit, Colditz Castle. It has amazed us that Lutz & Antje, nor anyone they know, have any knowledge of the WW2 significance of the castle.

We said our goodbyes and made our way to the autobahn to head south. I had stayed at Colditz Camping when I had visited in 2010 and entered it as our destination today. We made reasonable progress at our towing limit of 80kph(50mph), interrupted by the occasional roadworks. Kim once again was startled by a Porsche Cayenne passing closely by travelling at least three times our speed 🙂

We found the campsite easily as I recognised the narrow road we needed to take. Pulling up at the padlocked gate we were informed that the site was closed for the season. Bugger. A resident came over and told us of a site that was open all year over at Bad Lausick, about 15km to the west so we headed there. We received a very warm welcome at Campingplatz Landidyll and setup in a nice spot in the evening sun before firing up the BBQ for the first time in ages to cook a fine pair of steaks.

Towing Kilometres – Today: 248 Cumulative: 25,438

Saturday was a day of domestic duties including a mountain of washing.

Today we made our way over to Colditz for lunch as arranged. There is a distinct lack of eating places in the town. Kim had found online a small pub like establishment near the castle walls, Waldschlößchen.

We met up with Lutz, Antje & Lisa in the town square and made our way up the hill to the restaurant where we all enjoyed hearty meals and good beer & wine to celebrate Kims’ 50 11th birthday 🙂

Happy Birthday Kim!!
