Into Hungary

Monday 8th July 2019

Camping De Oude Wilg was a nice place to stay. On arrival we were given a sample of home made raspberry liqueur as well as a sample of ţuică the Romanian National drink.

The facilities are fine and clean with plenty of hot water. We had read reviews complaining of the close proximity to the railway but it wasn’t an issue for us. There is a very well stocked shop a less than five minute walk from the site.

Best of all the price converted to about £11 a night, electricity included!

Comfortable as we were it was time to move on again. We wanted to visit Budapest next so a route was plotted with a planned night stop just before the Hungarian border.

We made good progress on a smooth Romanian motorway until that run out due to road works. A navigational/turn error saw us backtrack up the same motorway for 14km and then redo the section we had already passed before taking the correct turn onto sometimes appalling road surfaces.

Fortunately we later rejoined the motorway and decided that as it was still early we would press on into Hungary. We did then have a delay of about an hour at the border.

Kim chose a campsite, Sziksósfürdő Strand és Kemping, near Szeged which became our target for the day.

On arrival it was evident the bedroom mirror hadn’t taken well to the road surfaces and had cracked right across. Speedtape surgery was needed 🙂

After setting up & changing we went out to have an excellent meal at a local restaurant, Rózsa Sándor Csárda – Zsombó, with the bill coming in at the equivalent of £27 including a large tip!!

With a relatively short towing day in prospect we had a casual pack up and set off for Zugliget Niche Camping in Budapest.

I had used this site in 2010 and had fond memories of the place that used to be a tram depot many years ago.

The trip progressed comfortably on smooth motorway. Although there are tolls you pay online at a modest cost.

We arrived early afternoon. Kim was a little dismayed at the site which looks a little scruffy these days.

The washrooms in particular are looking outdated and frankly dirty.

The staff are as friendly as I remembered and still provide a welcome drink on check-in.

It was also quite rammed with motorhomes and campers but we squeezed the caravan into a narrow space.

We intend to stay for 3 nights.

After setting up and a coffee we wandered a short way down the hill from the site and rode the Zugliget Chairlift & visited the Elizabeth Lookout to sample the fine views over the city before relaxing with a beer each to steady the nerves for the return trip 🙂
