Capri

Thursday 9th May 2019

Today we set off to explore the nearby island of Capri. Extremely unusually for us we had to set an alarm because the ferry was due to leave at 8:15am, a time we rarely see these days 🙂

We had pre purchased the return ferry tickets from our genial campsite host for the sum of €80.20 and we were waiting on the dock in good time for the ferry. We arrived in Capri around 10am following a change of ferry in Sorrento. The port was already extremely busy.

Mount Vesuvius, Campania, Italy

Wednesday 8th May 2019

Today we were heading out by car to visit the famous Mount Vesuvius, mainly known for destroying the town of Pompeii in AD 79 but also the eruption of this volcano buried and destroyed the lesser towns of Herculaneum, Opiontis and Stabiae, to name a few. The volcano is carefully monitored and although the most recent eruption was in 1944 we were definitely hoping that the gods would be kind today 😉 Continue reading Mount Vesuvius, Campania, Italy

Vico Equense, Campania, Italy

Monday 6th May 2019

Our delightful rural campsite situated a stone’s throw from the sea and a small busy marina is close to the town of Vico Equense, the first town along the Sorrentine peninsula in a relatively quiet part of this spectacular part of Italy but nevertheless in an ideal position to reach and explore the many tourist sites, such as Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Sorrento, Positano and the beautiful Amalfi coast, as well as Ischia, the island of Capri and the Il Sentiero degli Dei, the Path of the Gods, a walking trail along a mountain ridge high above the sea and if that isn’t enough Scrajo, a spa with large thermal baths, access to the beach and sulphur water pools a drive away. Marina Di Equa

Sunday 5th May 2019

Today we packed up and left Camping Roma Capitol to travel further south to Camping Sant’Antonio in Vico Equense. This will be our base to visit some sites in the Naples area. The campsite is a €20 a night Camping Card site. It has mixed reviews but is just across the road from the Marina Di Equa, a picturesque little port with numerous bars & restaurants, including a 2 star Michelin one.

We thought we could be comfortable in such a place 🙂

The Colosseum

Friday 3rd May 2019

Today we drove a few kilometres over to the local station, Ostia Antica, to take the train into Rome to visit the Colosseum. Our first parking attempt at the station car park actually turned out to be at a cemetery, but we were soon put right by a friendly local and found one of the last places free at the real station car park 🙂

Kim & I had visited Rome a few years previously and, although we had seen the outside of the arena, we hadn’t entered. Time to put that right. We purchased the tickets at the station, €7 each for a 24hr period on all public transport. Continue reading The Colosseum
