After a couple of days of inclement weather we decided to escape our cabin fever and take a drive out and boy were we taken by surprise.
Saturday had been a glorious day and we had enjoyed a circular walk through the historic wine trail that was directly opposite our campsite.

The trail made a steady climb through endless vineyards whilst enjoying the views below. Information boards, in German, provided details of the history of the vineyards and the purpose of the trail and the Castellberg Project.

Hazy view towards Sulzburg
The sight of so many vines came as quite a shock to both of us as neither of us had any idea that this area in Germany was home to one of the country’s wine growing regions, although that said, 80% of production is sold locally 😉 Continue reading Todtnauer Waterfall→
Campingpark Oberammergau had been a nice place to stay. The facilities are good and everyone on site friendly. The advertised Camping Card rate of €17 per night was once again bloated by tourist tax, environment tax etc to nearer €23, a bit annoying.
We decided to move over into the Black Forest region for the next leg of our journey back to the UK. I had passed through the region in 2009 on the motorcycle and fancied a closer look. The weather forecast for that region was better than close to the Alps too 🙂
About 18 kms south of Oberammergau is the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the location of the Zugspitzbahnhof. Here you can take the cogwheel train via Grainau on the Eibsee Lake, through the 4.8 km Zugspitze Tunnel to the Zugspitzeplatt. The entire journey takes about 80 minutes. Trains only run once an hour up and back so best to check the times before visiting.
I could happily have stayed at Campingplatz Seecamp for a while longer but what they were charging us, particularly at this time of year, was far too much. This was highlighted while chatting to another Brit visitor, staying long term, who were paying less per week than we were per day! Time to move on.
Kim had been studying the Camping Card book and had noticed a site with good reviews in Oberammergau, home of the famous Passion Play, so that became our target for the day.
After the previous day’s poor weather conditions, particularly the relentless rain, we woke to bright skies and spectacular views across Lake Zell and the snow capped Alps in the distance.

I must admit that Ray has come up trumps many times choosing our next location and we are often blessed with some decent weather conditions, if only for a day or two but more than expected at this time of the year 😉 Continue reading Grossglockner High Alpine Road→
