Millau – Camping du Viaduc

Monday June 11th 2018

With the weather forecast for Bidart predicting wet weather for the next few days it was time to move on.  The weather over to the east of France was supposedly much better so we decided to head that way.

I had visited Millau two times previously on my motorcycle trips, and the viaduct and surrounding area are amazing. Kim had not been there so it was decided to head that way. We thought that the trip was too many kilometres for one day so headed for Camping Midi Pyrénées, at Montréjeau, an easy couple of hours away, for a one or two night stopover.

We took the A64 autoroute and stopped for a ‘comfort’ break at Aire Les Pyrénées. While I was using the facilities, Kim noticed a very large sculpture, a monument to the many times the Tour De France has passed through the region over the years.

The statue is surrounded by information boards detailing the achievements of various famous riders.

As you can see from the picture above the weather was fine at this point. We resumed the drive and within 20km or so the sky clouded over rapidly and the heavens opened. As we approached the Montréjeau junction the rain was hammering down and a very quick decision was made to press on to Millau rather than set up in the rain.

Towing Kilometres – Today: 516 Cumulative: 14,796

As we continued along the A64 the Garonne river looked close to bursting its’ banks and flowing very quickly.

The circumnavigation of part of the Toulouse peripherique was as fraught as it had been in December when we were here but passed without incident.

As we progressed east the weather brightened and the temperature rose.

On arrival at Campsite du Viaduc we were warmly welcomed at reception. We requested a riverside pitch and were given a choice of three. We chose pitch 81 and I think we have the best pitch here.

Within minutes we had guests!

Why they wanted to sit in a puddle with a massive river nearby is unknown 🙂

The site is well maintained and facilities are excellent. The food in the restaurant is very good. At €15 a night it is very good value.
