Up The Trollstigen To Geirangerfjord

Saturday 18th August 2018

After a good nights sleep in the layby we set off on a journey I had been looking forward to. I had ridden my motorcycle up Trollstigen, or Trolls Road, in 2012 and I knew that towing the van up would be exciting.

Kim wasn’t as enthused 🙂 We wound our way around the twisty roads until we finally reached the start of the climb. The climb passed fairly easily, with only one coach coming the other way 🙂

Towing Kilometres – Today: 174 Cumulative: 22,255

Once at the top we parked and walked back to sample the magnificent views afforded by the walkways and viewing platforms.

After a quick look around the very busy gift shop we made our way back to the car and wound our way down to another nearby attraction on the road 63, the Trollstigen-Geiranger National Tourist Route, Gudbrandsjuvet.

After a brief stop to walk around the walkways and admire the shear power of the water rushing through these ancient rocks we returned to the car.

After a telling off by a coach driver, for parking in ‘his’ spot, we continued on the 63 road toward Geiranger.

The road disappears into the fjord at Linge, so we joined the short queue for the ferry. The cost of the 12 minute ‘sailing’ over to Eidsdal was a rather shocking 357NOK and the loader took pity on us and charged for up to 10 metres long. We are nearer 13!

The impressive Eagle Road that descends 620 metres down to Geiranger was the next feature on this excellent route. The road has 11 hairpin bends and a superb viewpoint, Ørnesvingen, at the top hairpin. Unfortunately for us the area was rammed with tourist coaches and cars with nowhere for us to stop. We continued down to Geirangerfjorden Feriesenter where we were to stay 3 nights.

The site is a wonderful spot to stay with views down to Geiranger and up the fjord, with cruise liners passing by almost within touching distance 🙂
