After a couple of days of inclement weather we decided to escape our cabin fever and take a drive out and boy were we taken by surprise.
Saturday had been a glorious day and we had enjoyed a circular walk through the historic wine trail that was directly opposite our campsite.
The trail made a steady climb through endless vineyards whilst enjoying the views below. Information boards, in German, provided details of the history of the vineyards and the purpose of the trail and the Castellberg Project.
The sight of so many vines came as quite a shock to both of us as neither of us had any idea that this area in Germany was home to one of the country’s wine growing regions, although that said, 80% of production is sold locally 😉
As we drove higher from the Rhine Valley we began to emerge out of the fog and into more pleasant weather conditions. The temperature went from 8°C to 17° C within a few miles and increase in elevation!
Before long we found ourselves in the Todtnau tourist region admiring the wonderful Bavarian scenery on either side of the road.
Having seen a sign for the Todtnauer Wasserfall we followed the road up to Todtnauberg and the parking area at the top of one of the highest waterfalls in Germany.
There was also a lower car parking area overlooking the small town of Todtnau, where you could also access the falls and in our opinion would be a better option, in hindsight.
We wouldn’t say this was the most spectacular waterfall we have ever seen, as it only plunges 97 m into the valley below and it wasn’t probably at its peak volume but the climb up and down will certainly give you a good cardio workout and the views are as good as ever.
