Sulzbachtal Camping

Thursday 1st November 2018

Campingpark Oberammergau had been a nice place to stay. The facilities are good and everyone on site friendly. The advertised Camping Card rate of €17 per night was once again bloated by tourist tax, environment tax etc to nearer €23, a bit annoying.

We decided to move over into the Black Forest region for the next leg of our journey back to the UK. I had passed through the region in 2009 on the motorcycle and fancied a closer look. The weather forecast for that region was better than close to the Alps too 🙂

Towing Kilometres – Today: 378 Cumulative: 27,009

We chose a site near Freiburg, Campsite Sulzbachtal, some 380km to the west. We got packed up and ready to roll a little earlier than usual to ensure we could complete the trip before darkness arrived around 5pm. The headlights on the Kuga are not the best for driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road.

Within a half hour of setting off the clouds rolled away and the temperature ‘soared’ unexpectedly to around 18° in bright sunsine.
Once again we rolled effortlessly along smooth wide roads enjoying the marvellous scenery of southern Germany.

We stopped to fill with diesel and LPG before joining the A96 autobahn which drops down toward Lindau. We made three attempts to stop for a coffee break at the A96 rest areas, but all were rammed with trucks leaving nowhere for us to park. We had discovered yesterday that today is a national holiday so trucks are banned from the roads as they are every Sunday, hence the blocked rest areas.

For some reason I had always pictured Friedrichshafen as a quaint village on the shore of the Bodensee. It is not, it’s huge, not quaint, and has long stretches of 30kph speed limits where it feels like it would be quicker to get out and walk! We were pleased when we left town 🙂

We then passed along the north shore of Lake Constance enjoying fine views over the water and kilometre after kilometre of vines and fruit trees.

As we approached Freiburg we passed fields still showing evidence of recent snowfall. Turning south toward the Sulzbachtal campsite the whole area becomes a huge vineyard, with vines in all directions for as far as the eye can see.

We received a warm welcome and were told to choose a pitch and report back. We have a spacious pitch on the terraced site with excellent views over the vineyards towards the nearby hills. The excellent, heated, shower block is nearby too.
