Unbeknown to us our chosen destination was in an area of Gelderland called Achterhoek. It is a delightful rural area and a superb spot for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors. We had views of the River and were surrounded by fields, farms and had access to a web of cycle routes, clearly signposted, which made exploring the area and the small villages around us so easy. Whilst on our visit to the Millau visitors centre earlier in the week we had picked up a Discovery Guide to Aveyron, in which was an article about “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”. One of the 10 listed villages in Aveyron was Peyre, just a very short 11 km drive downstream from Millau.

This morning we set off to visit the Le Viaduc de Millau. As it forms part of the A75 autoroute we drove a short way north of Millau to join the road then headed south toward the viaduct.
We were lucky that the small hill top town of Bidart was just a short walk or cycle ride away from our base, although the journey up to the town took a little more effort than the return 😉 The well known resort town of Biarritz and its international airport was also only about 6 kms north from here, although we never visited during our stay.
