In my motorcycling touring days I had considered coming to the Picos de Europa on a couple of occasions but the lure of further destinations such as Croatia and Norway had always taken priority. Now was a good time to rectify my omission. We packed up and set off along the the A8 Autovia toward Campsite La Isla-Picos de Europa
Towing Kilometres – Today: 294 Cumulative: 13,946
The journey on the A8 passed through marvellous scenery again but there were a distinct lack of places to refuel the car without leaving the motorway. This can sometimes be a pain with the caravan in tow. The journey progress changed markedly at the point we turned off of the motorway near Bustio onto the N621.
Within minutes the road narrowed and twisted and turned its’ way through steep sloped ravines with ragged rock overhangs. We often had to use more than our side of the road to avoid striking either the cycles on the car roof or the caravan.The road was also undergoing bridge repairs at three points which entailed slowing to a crawl to cross sharp changes of road surface after waiting many minutes for traffic lights to change.
Fortunately we met only one tourist coach coming toward us, but still the 45km route took well over an hour.
We received a warm welcome at Campsite La Isla and were directed to choose a pitch. The site was not busy, but the ground was very waterlogged in places. None of the pitches available were very level. The washroom facilities are clean & tidy. The site costs €15 per night, with Camping Card, with 6amp electricity.
We were very unlucky with the weather during our stay. With better weather we could have enjoyed more the patio bar next to the fast running stream.
Once setup we drove down to the nearby town of Potes for a wander around. The town was very quiet probably due to the weather. Here are some of the scenes from this pleasant town;
