Toward Stockholm

Sunday 15th to Tuesday 17th July 2018

One of our to do list tasks whilst travelling up through Sweden was a visit to the capital city, Stockholm. After ablutions, in the caravan, a rarity, we packed ready to travel to our target for the day, Gränna Camping which was roughly half way toward Stockholm.

When packing to leave, I prepare the outside whilst Kim does inside. My job was much easier as we hadn’t detached the car, nor had an electric cable to wind, nor used the stabilising legs because of our late arrival.

We stopped for fuel as soon as possible so as to dispose of our rather heavy load of waste water from showering this morning. Progress was good along smooth dual carriageway roads for most of the trip.

On arrival at Gränna Camping there was an amazing sight of a queue of motorhomes and caravans about 250m long, all waiting to turn left into the site! This along with all other Sunday afternoon traffic entering and leaving the nearby car park.

A very quick decision was taken to turn around and head elsewhere.

About 8km further north was Getingaryd Camping so we headed off there. On arrival there was no queue and we were allocated a pitch straight away.

The site is on a slope with fairly limited facilities for the number of pitches. The facilities are clean and tidy but taking a shower costs 5SEK. They only take cash. There are excellent views over, and swimming opportunities in, the Vättern, the sixth largest lake in Europe.

We stayed for two nights doing little other than some shopping in the nearby town and domestic chores along with the usual reading and imbibing 🙂

On Tuesday we stowed everything away and made our way toward Bredäng Camping Stockholm. We had selected this site as it had very good metro connections to the city nearby and the reviews were good.

On arrival there was a sign saying full for caravans. After making enquiries we were told we could stay on a what turned out to be a ‘free for all’ area without electric hookup and no marked spaces.

We accepted and setup on a nice spot with some shade from a large tree. Within two hours we were surrounded by campervans, motorhomes and tents of all shapes and sizes completely obliterating the surroundings.

We both hated it and vowed to skip the Stockholm visit and move north. Fortunately we both reconsidered later, and we will visit the city tomorrow.
