700km to Trondheim

Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th August 2018

Based on the current weather and the forecast for the next few days the decision was made to press on the 700km, or so, south to visit Trondheim. I had visited the cathedral in 2012 and was sure Kim would enjoy it there.

The route was almost all on the E6 and the start was delightful through Saltfjellet – Svartisen National Park.

Progress was often hampered by mile after mile of roadworks. The E6 is being widened and straightened in many places.

The construction works use countless tons of rock and concrete and are most impressive. The cost of the project must be huge.

We stopped off to take a look around the Artic Circle Centre shop as we passed by. We resisted the urge to sample the reindeer burger for almost £19 and settled on buying a couple of postcards instead  🙂

Late afternoon we were looking out for a free camping spot for the night when Kim spotted Yttervick Camping as we passed by. A quick U turn saw us back on site and setup, ready for a beer. The price per night once again was in excess of 330NOK not including shower. We are both looking forward to getting back to Camping Card prices as soon as possible.

Tuesday morning we were on the move around 9:30 and again roadworks made for slow going. After a couple of hours we spotted Laksforsen Waterfall (65.6237N 13.2916E) from the road and stopped to take a look.

Anyone noticed that we  seem to have developed an overwhelming fascination with moving water?  🙂

A few kilometres further down the road we passed south under the gateway to Nord Norge and stopped briefly to use the facilities. The café was closed for the season.

Fortunately, we took a coffee break soon after and I noticed that we had a puncture in the left rear wheel. The TPMS on the car hadn’t activated so it must have just  happened.  On removing the wheel to make a repair I noticed that the tyres on the back were both badly worn on the inside edges of the tread. The tyres looked fine in-situ but would have to be replaced before going much further.

Later we drove into Harran, a town I remembered from 2012. We stayed the night at Harran Camping. The site was adequate for an overnight stopover, if a little expensive.

On Wednesday we embarked on the final leg down to Trondheim. We chose to stay at Storsand Gård Camping a few kilometres east of the city directly overlooking Trondheim Fjord.

We arrived on site and setup in a nice spot with electricity and water right by our pitch.  Once again the on site facilities are good and the staff we met were very friendly.

I took an hour to do some fishing from the sites pier but returned empty handed.

We plan to visit Trondheim tomorrow. There is a bus stop right outside the camp and the bus takes 40 minutes and costs an eye watering 60NOK each way, each! The prices in Norway never fail to shock.
