Saltstraumen

Sunday 12th August 2018

The ferry arrived in Bodø bang on time and after unloading we made our way to a campsite that Paul & I had stayed at in 2012, Saltstraumen Camping.

Towing Kilometres – Today: 30 Cumulative: 21,178

The reason for this choice of site was to see the nearby maelstrom in action. The site has hard standing and grass pitches and the facilities are excellent. The shower blocks are immaculate and the water as hot as you could wish for. Because of the rain we set up on a hard standing pitch with drinking water nearby.

As there was a new moon the tide would be at it highest and the water running at its fastest. The maelstrom is quite a sight and draws many people four times a day to see the power of the water streaming through the narrow channel. It is one of the strongest tidal flows anywhere in the world.

The Saltstraumen is a very good place for angling. Many types of fish pass through the 150 metre wide strait carried along in the strong tidal flow.

On the way back from viewing the maelstrom we passed Saltstraumen Church. This is a wooden structure built in 1886. Around 1900 it had to be moved 300 metres because it had been erected on unstable ground 🙂
