The Church Of Bones

Friday 12th October 2018

In the mid 2000’s I had seen the TV series Long Way Round and it was the main inspiration for my own motorcycle tours in subsequent years.

One of the first places Ewan & Charly had stopped off to visit enroute was the Sedlec Ossuary, The Church Of Bones. I had visited it on my 2010 trip to Poland & Romania.

As it is relatively nearby we took a drive over today for Kim to see for herself.

The drive over was pain free save for the fact that the Czechs hate it if you wish to stick to speed limits and tailgate you for miles before overtaking at the least appropriate moment.

On arrival I noticed that the site of the church is undergoing major works to the exterior. Inside, I noticed that they now charge for the privilege of entering, a change from 2010.

The chapel is decorated with the skeletons of an estimated sixty thousand people and it is visited by around 200,000 people a year making it one of the most visited ‘attractions’ in the Czech Republic!

Some people have even requested to be married in the chapel! (It is not possible)

Probably the strangest place we have visited on this tour, but fascinating none the less.
