Top of our plan list today was to drive back over to Pylos for lunch. Even during our tribulations in the town yesterday it looked like a nice place to be.
We drove the reverse of the route we took yesterday admiring again the marvellous views. The traffic was very light and driving a complete contrast to the experiences we had had in Italy.
As we approached Methoni we noticed the large castle and diverted into the village and parked up.
We made our way over to the castle entrance only to find that, unfortunately, it is closed on Tuesdays.
Plan B was invoked which was to walk around the outside along a narrow beach next to the harbour and we passed an interesting looking portico to the castle.
Walking as far as possible we were unable to see the Bourtzi, a sea tower once used as a prison but had a good view of the harbour.
Returning to the car we set off for Pylos. Following the signs we entered the town on a completely different road than yesterday, the road we should actually have been exiting town on then.
Parking on the dockside our attention was immediately drawn to an immaculate motor yacht, High Power III, moored on the quayside.
We overheard someone talking to a crew member and learnt the vessel is for sale. We decided not to enquire as to the price 🙂
Walking into the busy town square Kim decreed that it was beer o’clock and, with me being unable to see any reason to object to this, we found a shaded table and ordered our drinks and a light lunch. A pleasant time was spent watching the world go by 🙂
After refreshments we decide that a little exercise wouldn’t go amiss so we climbed up the steep street to visit a church we had noticed from the dock.
There were good views over the town from the church and on the way back down noticed even steeper climbs were available in town!
Making our way back to the car I noticed a marine and camping shop. Knowing we were running short of toilet chemicals I entered to look around only to receive the best welcome in any shop I’ve ever been in!
Within seconds I had a seat, a glass of cold orange squash, and a biscuit, this before even buying anything 🙂
Kim came in later only to receive the same treatment. I think it must have taken half an hour to buy the chemicals along with some olive oil, “from my brothers farm” he said, that we didn’t need, and some plastic pegs.
€40 gone. What a salesman 🙂
Back at the car I set up to get the drone video, above, but quickly had to abandon that idea as the local swifts decided they objected and started to get a little too close for comfort.
One last stop for a photograph leaving town and we were off to see Pylos Voidokoilia.
Shaped like the Greek letter omega the beach is now a protected Place of Particular Natural Beauty and we spent a relaxing half hour strolling along the water front before returning to camp.
