Back in 2012 I had ridden my motorcycle into Romania specifically to ride the Transfăgărășan Road. The road had been featured on the BBC programme Top Gear in late 2009 and they described it as the worlds best road.
Unfortunately my visit had coincided with extreme rain and floods and I only got to ride the north side in very poor visibility.
With the weather much better in the area this time the plan was to tow the van over from Curtea De Arges to Cârțișoara.
Time to move on again. Our target for today was Camping Madona in Falkovets, north-west Bulgaria.
With our two year tour coming into the last few weeks we decided to skip visiting the capital city, Sofia, and press on further, conscious of the distance we still have to cover back to the UK.
Our base in the tiny village of Kromidovo was just a short drive to Melnik, reputed to be the smallest town in Bulgaria and at last count, a population of 385 inhabitants. Today we were up at, for us, sparrow fart. The intention was to beat the crowds and visit the largest and oldest of the meteora monasteries The Great Meteoron Monastery.
A chance meeting after dinner in the beachside bar at Enjoy Lichnos on Tuesday night has led to us moving today up to Meteora a UNESCO listed group of rock formations with six precipitously built monasteries perched on top.
